| Clircle Hook Technique- Ron Hamlin-Capt. Hook |
|
There's a lot of miss information going around on how to use circle hooks for billfish. If you'll try the method I teach on the Captain Hook I think your hook up ratio will go up. When the fish comes up to bite, point the rod straight at him. Free spool as you would normally to a count of 4 that's 1-1,000 2-1,000 3-1,000 and 4 1,000 longer is not better for the angler or the fish!! Put the reel in gear to the strike mark and wind at a normal rate If he's not there put the reel in free spool again when he bites do the same thing all over again. till the line starts to run off the reel. Then do what you would normally do, catch em. This method works on ALL the different billfish. Starting with new anglers every 3 or 4 days and teaching them all over again my anglers still average catching around 70% of there bites for the year. Good Luck. |

Your line is the only conection to your fish, so you always want fresh line.
Don't fill your trooling reel all the way with mono as the bottom half never gets used and you wind up throwing it away. Instead put a 500 yd. spool of spider wire on the bottom, the same lb. test as you want on top. and then fill the top 200-300 yds with mono ( hi Vis) Berkley or Stren. That way you cut back twice on the amount of wasted line. Strip back to the Spider Wire and refill, so you always have brand new line on top, the spider wire never goes bad.
You connect the 2 with a Bimini twist in the Spider Wire, about a 3 to 4 ft. loop, and then double it back using a Spider Hitch, so you have a 4 strand loop about 1-1/2 to 2 ft. long. Make another 3 ft. loop with another Bimini twist in the Mono. Conect the two loop to loop, it's a 100% conection. I do this with every reel on my boat Spinning ,Fly and Trooling. You'll also have more line on your reel for that really big one as the diamiter of the Spider in so much thinner.
